BigKeys Plus Toddler Keyboards are for toddlers and children with basic keyboard needs who would benefit from the simple keyboard layout and large keys.

Educator's Comments

"When BIGKEYS was first field-tested in Head Start classrooms, we received overwhelmingly positive feedback."

"Children are attracted to the keyboard, not intimidated by it (as they sometimes are by a standard computer keyboard)."

"When asked what they most liked about BIGKEYS, the kids said the colors made it fun. They also see it as not just a toy but as something they know grown-ups use."

"A child's attention is held long-term, and they feel success in their ability to actually use a computer."

"Staff felt that the fine motor skill development was enhanced with BIGKEYS."

Formats

The BigKeys Plus Toddler Keyboard is available in two keyboard layouts:

  • ABC Layout
  • The order of the alpha keys is the same as the alphabet and the keyboard is perfect for toddlers who are learning their ABCs or learning how to read.

The ABC ordered keys invite the youngest learner to have fun while learning to recognize the ABC's and interact with their educational toddler computer games.

  • QWERTY Layout
  • The alpha keys are in standard keyboard order: Q,W,E,R,T,and Y are the first 6 alpha keys on a standard keyboard. ("qwerty" is pronounced "kwur-tee")

This keyboard format is for toddlers who are already familiar with standard QWERTY key layout. The QWERTY key layout lets toddlers take advantage of their educational toddler computer games and become visually acquainted with the letter arrangement on a standard keyboard.

Which BigKeys Plus Toddler Keyboard Layout Is Right For Your Toddler?

  • ABC Layout
  • If your toddler is still learning the alphabet and your toddler is still learning to recognize letters and simple words, the ABC keyboard layout is appropriate.

For toddlers ages 2 thru 6 the ABC layout is recommended. It provides the easiest access to the computer for toddlers who are learning or have just learned their alphabet.

"Before learning to type (using a "standard" keyboard), it is first necessary to recognize the alphabet and know how to read. Using an ABC layout BigKeys Plus keyboard doesn't get in the way of later using a regular keyboard easily. It makes it easier!

It's easier for a child to use alphabet software while learning to read using BigKeys Plus. Because BigKeys Plus presents the letters in the "right order" learning is easier. As the child learns the lesson being taught by the program, finding specific letters on BigKeys Plus reinforces the alphabet."

  • QWERTY Layout
  • If the toddler is composing sentences and learning vocabulary, and uses a computer at school, the QWERTY layout would be appropriate.
